The map

Each heading is its own course. Later ones open when you finish — or test out of — the one before. A later course does not reteach earlier bands.

  1. A1

    Start here

Hear and produce the six tones, greet people, order at a cha chaan teng, and get around Hong Kong in simple present-tense Cantonese.

  2. A2

After A1 — or test out

Handle errands, plans, and short past-and-present stories in spoken Cantonese.

  3. B1

After A2 — or test out

Give opinions, follow slower authentic talk or a simple show, and write a clear message in colloquial Cantonese.

  4. B2

After B1 — or test out

Argue a point, follow most news and workplace Cantonese, and handle sentence-final particles with control.

  5. C1

After B2 — or test out

Keep up with native-speed Hong Kong conversation and most colloquial writing.

  6. C2

After C1 — or test out

Work near-native: humour, register, particles, and long-form Cantonese.

What this is for

  1. 01

Order at a cha chaan teng and get across town without switching to English.

  2. 02

Hear the six tones well enough that si, si, and si are not the same word.

  3. 03

Keep up with Hong Kong conversation — particles and all — then joke in it.

Why a path, not a playlist

Most apps teach Mandarin and call it Chinese. This path is Cantonese: Jyutping, six tones, cha chaan teng talk, sentence-final particles. Each band is its own course. Later ones do not reteach A1.

Already have some? Test out of a band in one sitting and land where you actually are.

After you sign in

  • You land on this map — every heading is already there.
  • Start a heading, or test out in one sitting, like placing out of a college course.
  • Each heading is one shared course — same syllabus and first class for everyone. Later classes continue on your copy.
