Why Sindhi

Sindhi is the language of Sindh — spoken by tens of millions in Pakistan and India, and by a wide diaspora. It is an Indo-Aryan language with a deep Sufi literary tradition, written today mainly in a Perso-Arabic script in Pakistan and in Devanagari in parts of India.

If your family speaks Sindhi, or you want the language of Shah Abdul Latif and everyday Sindh, a Hindi or Urdu course will not get you there. The grammar is its own, and the script is not Nastaliq Urdu with the labels swapped.

What makes Sindhi challenging: and how Maia helps

Perso-Arabic script

Sindhi adds several letters to the Arabic alphabet for sounds Urdu and Arabic do not write the same way. Vowels are often unwritten. Maia builds script fluency before asking you to read unvowelled text.

Implosives and retroflexes

Sindhi has implosive consonants that English does not. Getting them wrong is still intelligible at first; getting them right is what makes you sound like you belong. Maia drills them in real words, not a phonetics lecture.

Spoken vs written

Everyday Sindhi and formal written Sindhi diverge. Maia teaches the spoken language you will actually use, then builds reading in the script as it appears on signs and in messages.
